Top 5 Poker TV Shows
published on 03/04/11 at 9:00 am Looking to catch some great poker action on your television set this week? Then, this is the article that clues you in about where all the poker action is. So, read on to find out which TV channels you have to set your dial to for watching shows packed with poker glitz!! #1 Poker TV Show: GSN’s High Stakes PokerThis show was launched in 2006 and was one-of-a-kind among all existing poker shows because one could sit alongside the top poker professionals from all corners of the globe, such as Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu of PokerStars, and Jen Harman as opposed to the tournament format of other shows. Thus, this show allowed viewers to watch the poker biggies gamble with their personal cash (tons of it, really considering each player had to buy-in using USD 100,000 with variations of deals one doesn’t normally get to see anywhere else. #2 Poker TV show: ESPN’s World Series of PokerThis show has got to be the biggest ever in televised poker event history since nowhere else can viewers tune in to such a tremendous variety of poker games. You have Texas Hold’em, 7-card Stud andOmaha – played high with the Main Event being the real crowd puller because it is here that the nail-biting finish table action has everyone betting on who will walk away with the No Limit Hold’em tournament’s multi-million dollar first prize! #3 Poker TV show: World Poker TourThis show definitely has all the poker nuts tuning in to the WPT and also dragging along family and friends to watch the action after it launched with much fanfare in 2003. It rapidly climbed up the TRP charts and became the Travel Channel’s top rated program because of great poker tournament coverage from across the country’s best casinos. Each hand that is relayed on the TV screen causes hearts of poker fans to beat faster with the pace of the action speeding up across all the different channels the show airs on: from Fox Sports to Travel Channel to GSN, which is sponsored by PokerStars.net, viewers have a choice of which channel they want to change the dial for in order to be part of the poker claim to fame – just like the pros featured on this show! #4 Poker TV show: Bravo’s Celebrity Poker ShowdownThis show really built up the game’s popularity, much like the shows listed above because it brought in a niche audience to watch their favorite stars vying for great poker prize pools amid light-hearted bantering and some fabulous on-screen chemistry between the hosts: Phil Gordon of FullTilt and Dave Foley who came across as naturals when it came to informative commentary of the show’s action. Lots of poker fun, cool prizes, celebrity flavors and the rumors of poker veteran Phil Hellmuth taking to the hosting keep this TV show on the hot list of many card game enthusiasts. #5 Poker TV show: GSN’s Poker RoyaleThis TV show about poker is unique because it combines two opposing groups that come together to duke it out at the poker table, across different segments like Girls versus Boys or Celebrities versus Professionals. Three players from each group face each other at the No Limit Hold’em tournament and compete for the host of prizes – and of course, fan favor!

Reflections on the Full Tilt Poker Smear Campaign
published on 09/21/11 at 4:18 pm With all the “news” coming out about Full Tilt Poker and a so-called “Ponzi” scheme, I felt the need to say something. First, let me start by saying that Full Tilt Poker is a class organization that has treated this organization and overseas bank accounts fairly throughout the years. Howard Lederer and Jesus Ferguson are honest, trust worthy individuals. Not to mention, Rafe Furst, although he did move to Mexico, I can only say his work with charities and the Bad Beat on Cancer have garnered the utmost respect from me. Second, it is a shame to see the U.S. government stick their noses into something that was good for the poker industry, the nation’s economy, and an individual’s self esteem. The majority of players online are terrible and just give money to the lucky few. But these players kept depositing funds into their accounts, helping my lifestyle with a variety of extravagant needs. So what a player did not know about the inner processes of Full Tilt, did not hurt them. They would never have withdrawn funds in the first place. Third, all these dopes posting about a 400 million dollar hole in Full Tilt Poker’s finances, do not know one thing about international finance. 99% of their money is in overseas accounts. To get their money into U.S. accredited bank accounts takes several months, due to the Patriot Act. I believe Mr. Lederer and Mr. Ferguson are just waiting for the funds to go through the proper channels and everyone will be promptly paid. So let us stop slinging the proverbial mud at Full Tilt Poker. We need to let this show trial run its course and in the end, you shall all see that they are innocent of all charges.

The Russian online poker community
1 February 2009 Betfair announced in a Wednesday press release that it has opened its online client to the Russian poker community. On Wednesday Betfair, which boasts of the world’s biggest sports betting exchange, opened it doors to the Russian online poker community. With the emergence of a myriad of Russian pros on tour, the Eurasian nation has become a hotbed for new poker talent.”Up until now, the clients could only view information on the poker client and promotions in English, Spanish, German, and Italian, ” said Bruce Stubbs Head of Betfair Poker. ”However, we are delighted to start offering updated information to our Russian clients.”As of yet Team Betfair doesn’t boast of any Russians, Team PokerStars Pro already had a couple from the Russian Federation in the stable; 2008 Aussie Millions winner Alex Kostritsyn and WSOP bracelet winner and 2007 final tabler Alex Kravchenko. This year, PokerStars added powerhouse Ivan Demidov, who became the first player to make both the WSOP and WSOPE Main Event final tables, finishing in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Fellow Russian Stanislav Alekhin joined Demidov at the WSOPE final table, finishing as runner-up. The WSOPE was sponsored by Betfair.Full Tilt also has a couple red pros from Russia. Nikolay Evdakov burst onto the scene in 2008, setting a record at the WSOP with 10 cashes for the series. Breaking Humberto Brenes and Phil Hellmuth’s cashing record earned him a deal with Full Tilt. The WSOP women’s champ also plays on Full Tilt. Svetlana Gromenkova moved from Moscow to the U.S in 2002, went pro in 2005 and claimed her first bracelet in 2008, when she captured the Ladies Event title.”The Russian market is a fascinating one and one that continues to produced very talented individuals,” continued Stubbs. ”We saw a very strong showing from this region at this year’s WSOP Europe event which we currently sponsor. We hope that the new Russian client shows our commitment to developing and producing new offerings and hope to announce more in the coming year.”The Betfair announcement comes less than two months after PokerStars announced the formation of the Russian Poker Tour (RPT) The RPT just kicked off their inaugural event in St. Petersburg, a $5,000 that will wrap on Feb 1st. After St. Petersburg, it’s off to the $10K event in Moscow Feb.22-28. OPN Staff All trademarks and copyrighted information contained herein are the property of their respective owners.

Player to Dealer and Management Ethics in Poker Tournaments
Player to Dealer and Management Ethics in Poker Tournaments If you are required to respect the other poker players in the poker tournaments, be it a minor or major poker tournament, you are also required to respect the dealer and the management. The Poker Players and the Dealers Because the dealers treat the poker players who joined in the poker tournaments professionally, so should the poker players treat the dealers professionally. Before the start of the poker tournament, poker players agree to treat the dealers with a professional attitude as well as a respectful demeanor. If a dealer has decided against what a poker player wants, the player can ask the dealer about his decision but never with personal hostility. It cannot be helped that the dealers might commit mistakes and errors, and the players can always bring this to the attention of the dealer. But the player should never use any foul language or aggressive behavior in front of the dealer when discussing the decision. Likewise, the dealers themselves should treat the poker players equally and implement the poker tournament’s rules constantly, not giving deference to a poker player over the others. The dealers must never put a stake on a poker player’s hands and financial outcome. This is strictly prohibited as this promotes biased and prejudiced treatment, making it an unfair fight for the other players. To avoid controversy and further squabbles, the poker players and the dealers must report any inappropriate behavior at the poker table to a supervisor. The Poker Players and the Management The poker players who have joined in the poker tournament should always respect the management and should always employ a professional manner towards the management because the management will always extend the same courtesy towards its players. There will be times when a decision the management has made might not work with what a poker player wants. The decision will be discussed by the management and the poker player, but the player should refrain from making any denigrating remarks during the poker tournament about the management until an official report has been filed to the poker tournament director or at least to his representative. A poker player can definitely question a decision the management has made, but this should be done in a very professional manner and without any personal hostility towards the management. The complaint should be submitted and should only be discussed with the appropriate supervisor or manager, but never in front of other poker players. Likewise, no foul language should be used.

Bridging the Realism Gap with Online Poker Just Like Being at the Casino
Bridging the Realism Gap with Online Poker Just Like Being at the Casino Online Poker is uniquely positioned to be the highest growth computer game over the next decade. Now, the emergence of the crucial interpersonal elements at work in live casino play promise to make the online game an unstoppable force well into the next decade and likely beyond. Basically, the cutting edge versions of free online poker with Face Up technology will allow for a player to actually read opponents physical movements and body language. No longer will online poker be in essence a different form of the casino game, but rather will become a more convenient version of it. Moreover, even online poker tournaments are getting more popular than off-line ones. In the last few years, the total revenue generated worldwide by online poker sites has eclipsed 1 billion dollars on an annual basis. With still a great many people in the world yet to get online access, and poker shooting upwards in popularity as both a participation and spectator sport, there promises to be much more excitement for the players and sellers of the online game. One of the persistent criticisms of online poker by some players through the last decade, was that it still felt completely cut off from the casino driven essence of the game. That is, the ability to view your opponent in person has always created the allure of real energy and guile being traded in a subtle cat and mouse game. Many players who came up playing exclusively off-line, and then play online, miss the necessity to read body language, cues, and physical tendencies. Online poker doesn’t lose the analyticaland you might say, odds-dictated aspect of the offline game. But many have said that it is limited to a very robotic and for lack of a better word: computerized skill set needed to excel. As noted in a recent feature on the online game: Online players are required to focus more on betting patterns, reaction time, speed of play, and elements of opponents’ fold/flop percentages, rather than physical reading of opponents’ facial cues, twitches, and even breathing patterns. By some estimates, online poker has brought millions and millions of new players to the game over the last decade by taking away the intimidation of the casino environment and the large percentage of more experienced players found there. Using the online game, players can learn at their own pace with players of varying experience, and do it anonymously without any embarrassment or shame. Still, it might have been the movie “Rounders” where it was said, “if after 20 minutes, you don’t know who the sucker at the table is, it is you.” The game of poker is at it’s best when you can marry the analytical skill aspect with the almost super human power of reading and understanding people and tendencies. Emerging online versions known as Face Up gaming offer the convenience of online, with the most realistic version of the game as it was always intended to be played: face to face requiring the full arsenal of skills from each player.

PokerStars is Now Licensed in Malta
PokerStars has been granted an online gaming license in the Malta online gambling jurisdiction. The online poker site has now been licensed in seven online gambling jurisdictions, including Malta, the Isle of Man, Italy, Belgium, France, Estonia, and Denmark. PokerStars hopes to be granted an online gambling license in Spain too. “Obtaining an online gaming license is an arduous task. It requires significant resources and a willingness to allow detailed scrutiny of company practices and procedures that examine an applicant’s credentials in important areas like integrity, security and attitudes to responsible gaming,” said Eric Hollreiser, the Head of Corporate Communications at PokerStars. He further commented that the online poker company is happy to be put through this scrutiny in order to be granted online poker licenses in the various online gambling jurisdictions in which they wish to offer their well established and popular online poker site. Hollreiser spoke about the benefits to players and the uniqueness of being licensed in so many online gambling jurisdictions, saying: “We’re happy to submit to this, though, when there’s a clear benefit to players, the industry or our company. In particular, as far as our players are concerned, we believe that each new license we obtain underscores the reasons why they should feel comfortable playing with us. We don’t know of any company in our industry that has been licensed by as many jurisdictions as PokerStars.” The most recent of these online gaming licenses was granted to PokerStars by the Belgian Gaming Commission. The announcement followed soon after the Belgian government declared that they had plans to block any unlicensed online gambling operators in their country. “We are delighted that with the great efforts and cooperation of the Gaming Board we have been able to become fully regulated in the Belgium market,” said Jean Christophe Choffray. Choffray is the Head of Online Gaming at the parent company of PokerStars, Circus Groupe. Dennis Phillips Dennis is a 53-year old truck driver from St. Louis, Missouri. With 900 grand in his pocket and a shot for couple of millions more, expect this humble but eager tournament amateur to slug it out against the established veteran of the trade. Ivan Demidov Ivan is a professional poker player from Moscow who cashed in on three events and landed on the Main Event finals. Surprised as he was, expect this soft-spoken online poker hotshot to twist the tables around in November. Scott Montgomery Scott is a Canadian resident who has the killer combination in WSOP – a big bankroll and lots of experience. For those who tune in other tournaments, you’ve probably seen Scott in LA Poker Classic in 2008 where he finished fifth with almost 300 grand. Peter Eastgate Peter is a 22-year old poker player who hails from Denmark. But make no hasty remarks about his age because this young player is one of Denmark’s recognized online professional players since 2005. He cashed $10,000 dollars in for a chance at the felt table, and what do you know, after much of the 6,800 heads are gone, one of the youngest player this year is sitting on the poker table this November. Ylon Schwartz Ylon is a chess player who has been gambling for 25 of his 38 years. He has made his living out of playing poker for several years, and he has no plans of stopping right now. He was the player who has the most number of cash-in in WSOP event with 12. Should he win, expect him to be out of sight for sometime because this New Yorker plans to escape to where you least expect him to be. Darus Suharto Canadian Darus Suharto is set to follow the footsteps of an unknown accountant who shocked the world how number crunchers play poker. An Indonesian-born residing in Toronto Canada, expect Moneymaker-incarnate try to turn an $80 investment into multi-million dollar prize money. David Rheem Probably the most famous of the nine, David “Chino” Rheem has made several previous appearances in WSOP final table. This 28-year-old professional poker player has been playing poker since he was 18. With fear set aside and Lady Luck in place, Chino is ready to take on the final table challenge. Craig Marquis This 23-year-old poker player hailing from Arlington, Texas is the one who beat Hamrick’s AJ out of the tournament with pocket queens. Expect Lady Luck to flutter around this young poker player, especially when you realized he was just playing poker for 18 months. Kelly Kim He maybe a wee bit shorthanded when it comes to bankroll, but don’t expect him to back out just yet. A California-based business analyst who traded his portfolio for some chips, he has four months worth of time to think about how to make his narrow way to victory this November.
